UEA Orientation
I arrived at The University of East Anglia on Wednesday, Sep 19. After some quick registration tasks I got my room key and walked ~19 thousand miles (their campus is easily x3 the size of Dickinson’s) to the University village where my room is. I live in a flat with 8 people, we all share a kitchen but have our own rooms with a (tiny) bathroom. We don’t have an oven and only 2 mini fridges for 8 people is a bit sparse but we’ve made it work so far.
Spent the next couple of days mostly shopping and getting settled in. Norwich is about 2.5 miles away so to get into the city you have to take the bus, fortunately DSON has provided us with an unlimited use semester bus pass and the busses are pretty frequent and easy. I did a big grocery shop at Morrisons and got a bunch of essentials at Poundland (like ‘5 Below’ only Better!). Then Jmac offered us all a bunch of cooking supplies from last year’s group so I got most of my dishes, pots and pans from that.
Classes started on Monday (Sep 24) but were mostly just introductory lectures. There’s a 2 week add/drop period so I’ve spent a lot of time going to various lectures trying to figure out which courses I want to take. Some of the intro level courses were HUGE, especially an intro psych lecture I sat it on which easily had 150+ students crammed into the lecture hall. Currently the plan is to take ‘Artificial Intelligence’, ‘Information Retrieval’, ‘Systems Analysis’ and sit it on/audit ‘Programming 2’ (plus JMAc’s ‘History of Science’ continues to meet biweekly).
